Learning objectives

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the history and mechanism of action of fluoride as a caries-preventive agent, including the distinction between fluorapatite and hydroxyapatite.
  2. Compare the types, concentrations, and clinical indications for available topical fluoride products, with emphasis on varnish.
  3. Demonstrate correct fluoride varnish application technique and accurate post-application patient instructions across leading brands.
  4. Evaluate patient concerns about fluoride safety — including pineal gland accumulation, IQ associations, and thyroid effects — using published evidence.
  5. Apply principles of informed consent and informed refusal documentation to fluoride treatment conversations in clinical practice.
