How this is built
Who writes it
The content is written by a working hygienist who sat these boards, not assembled from a stock question bank. The whole reason this exists is that the study tools available didn't reflect how a clinician actually reasons through a patient — so every case and item is written from that chairside point of view.
How each item is built
- Mapped to the blueprint. Questions and cases are weighted to the current NBDHE discipline blueprint — 62% Clinical Services, 28% Scientific Basis, 10% Community Health & Research — so your practice mirrors the real exam's emphasis, including its growing focus on local anesthesia and emerging technology. This follows the JCNDE's updated 2026 discipline distribution; if you sit the legacy distribution, the content is identical — only the proportions shift slightly.
- Checked against current guidelines. Clinical content is written to current standards — the 2017 AAP/EFP periodontal staging-and-grading framework, the 2017 ACC/AHA blood-pressure categories, current fluoride, sealant, and local-anesthesia parameters, and current medical-emergency response.
- A rationale on every item. Each question explains not just the right answer but where the tempting wrong answers go astray — because understanding the reasoning is what transfers to the exam and the chair.
- Verified at the time of writing. Facts, figures, and guideline references are confirmed against authoritative sources when an item is written, not patched in later.

How it's kept current
Boards and guidelines change. When the NBDHE blueprint shifts or a clinical guideline is updated, the affected items are revised — and a Study Set purchase includes a full year of those updates as new cases and questions ship. The "last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
What's inside the Study Set
Counting the branching decisions inside the seven patient cases (200+ clinical choices) alongside the questions and prompts, the Study Set works out to 700+ practice items in total. Each case is a five-scene simulation with a 20+ question quiz.
What this is — and isn't
This is an independent study aid built to help you prepare for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination. The House of Hygiene is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE), and completing this material does not guarantee a passing score. It is a tool to make your studying active, current, and honest about where you stand.
